2018 Airstream Flying Cloud 25RB
After countless adventures in their 15’ Shasta Airflyte, affectionately known as “Shasty,” which ultimately proved too small and inflexible for Kirk and Vicky’s family, they knew an upgrade was inevitable. One weekend, with their camper in the shop for repairs and a camping trip on the horizon, Vicky stumbled upon a fantastic deal on a 2018 Airstream at a dealership in Salt Lake City — and they didn’t hesitate to make it theirs. Drawing on their experience renovating Shasty, they knew transforming this Airstream would be a far more intricate and challenging project.
Determined to get it right, Vicky dove into research — and that’s when she discovered Innovative Spaces.
“I first came across Innovative Spaces on Instagram and immediately showed their page to Kirk. We both just fell in love with their work. Their attention to detail and respect for quality materials felt like a perfect fit for us.”

Vision
This renovation blends the cozy charm of a woodsy cabin with southwestern design touches, creating a warm and inviting retreat for its adventurous owners.
“Kirk and I have always loved staying in real log cabins. We love a cozy fire in the winter as dusk descends outside. There’s a place in Mammoth we stay at each Christmas with this vibe — the Tamarack Lodge. But we didn’t want anything too cute-sy or kitsch. We didn’t want to try and fake a log cabin. I thought following a more spare and utilitarian aesthetic of a park ranger cabin would work. White paint, hard wood floors, blackened pot belly stove, tin tiles, Pendleton blankets… so I created a couple inspiration pages for Nate and team.”

“There is almost nothing like mornings in Cloudy! We just love sitting at the table with our coffee. The other thing that we love is watching a good, old-fashioned movie at night with popcorn we’ve popped right on top of the little wood burning stove. In fact, that’s actually her full name: ‘Cloudy with Chance of Popcorn!’”

“I wanted a place to work and develop future projects while on the road. We asked Innovative to put in two new windows where the shower used to be for a bright new work area. For this work area, Nate, Fred and their team created a gorgeous desk and drawers from 100-year-old reclaimed wood. I love how it looks like a beautiful, antique piece of furniture rather than a built in. The whole effect created a much bigger, brighter feeling of open space inside.”

“Our main complaint with this particular model really became about the stand-alone shower. It took up about 10 square feet and in a trailer that’s roughly 160 square feet, that’s a significant chunk of real estate. Plus, all we used it for was storage for our guitar, mandolin, banjo and broom while in transit. Our Shasta had a ‘wet’ bathroom and it just made so much more sense. When we made the decision that the shower had to go, so many other options opened up.”

We kept and refreshed the original upper cabinetry with a fresh coat of paint, then added a reinforced platform bed complemented by reading light sconces, side tables, and ample storage. To complete the look and maximize functionality, we incorporated reclaimed wood countertops for a warm, rustic touch.
Client Experience
“Our experience with Nate, Fred and gang were overwhelmingly positive. At no point did we feel like we were being upsold, talked into something we didn’t want or told they couldn’t do something that we did want! In fact, Vicky wanted a real wood-burning mini fireplace. In California this is a problem since fireplaces aren’t even allowed in new houses and most campgrounds in SoCal don’t even allow wood fires. But Innovative was able to figure it out and carry it off with aplomb!
Fred David is the sweetest, most accessible, and talented front-of-house guy you could ask for – an industrial designer by education (which suits him very well in his role!), he fills in the design role, does the fantastic 3D drawings, guides you through the myriad of decisions that must be made. He was a key player in the whole endeavor, and he did his job superbly!
Nate, the owner, is so talented at getting the work accomplished in such a high-quality manner, that it really struck me as him being one-of-kind. I work with contractors, tradesmen, and builders day in and day out. Nobody I’ve ever worked with has his level of attention to detail and mastery of his trade. He is a true craftsman. Plus, he’s also a kind, jovial, and most pleasant fellow!
Innovative Spaces is the kind of company we prefer – it’s like a restaurant with the kitchen in full view – you can see how the whole operation works. The chefs are there to greet you, to assist you, to make sure you get what you want. Yet it’s not slick and pretentious at all. You can see very clearly why things cost what they do, take the time they take. There is nothing hidden behind the curtain. If you are like Vicky and me, you will enjoy every minute of your time working with Innovative Spaces, and better yet, you’ll be blown away by the results!”
